At the time I made the painting in 2010, the IRS (Dutch: belastingdienst) had laid claim on all my possessions. Every week or so I had to visit the IRS headquarters here in Zwolle. And when I sat down in the waiting room I always felt anxious, because they might know more than you do and have some bad news up their sleeve (the IRS have massive sleeves..)
However, I discovered that the right, 'hypnotic' music in my earbuds could act like a rosecolored filter on my mind, changing my perception of any moment.
Previously when I sat down in the waiting room at the IRS, I focused my mind on feelings of anxiety about my appointment with the IRS agent. But now I put earbuds in and tuned my mind onto weird dub-mixes and psychedelic disco-instrumentals.
And the music hypnotized me, pulled me along with its melodies and spacey delays, and I started staring at details in the waitingroom; cracks in the ceiling, the moisty grass on my shoes, a tiny bug, scurrying around on the shiny floor. He's probably looking for food, I thought - there's just no room for swordfighting or pilates in the life of a bug...
Anyway, by the time the IRS agent came to get me, I was in a dreamy state of mind. Dreamy, but awake and alert. And I felt good! I'd found a little oasis in a desert of financial trouble..
Now when I think about making music, I often think of those days in that waiting room. And I've realised that above all else, I want to bring hypnotizing and fascinating music into this world, so that you as a listener can turn your afternoon into a dreamy day too....
